When Mama’s Sick

March 13th, 2008 by Megin Hatch · 1 Comment

crackersOh, dear.

And by “dear,” I mean every imaginable curse a mother can utter. I am digging my way out of 5 days of excessive ejection. The flu swept in to my body for a visit last Sunday and the wench hasn’t seen fit to leave yet.

It’s been a long time since my body was ravaged this way. And the best part was that my husband was away, while my 3 Punks were not. He was at a training a couple of hours away. On the worst day I had to summon him home, but as soon as I was able to sit upright he had to return to work. He was part of a 3 person team that was conducting the training.

And by “sitting up,” I mean prone on the couch instead of passed out on the bathroom floor.

Here’s what I have learned: Keep a Mama’s Sick emergency survival kit available at all times. This kit should be well-hidden from your scavenging offspring and include:

Saltines, ginger ale and ice pops
Mystery toys (shop sales!)
New drawing supplies (washable!)
All-time favorite DVDs (several!) which may only (!) be viewed in times of emergency
Easy food (lots!) preferable an assortment of self-serve items that when combined provide at least one or two vitamins.
A serving of negative guilt, (huge!) because even if your kids consume more media in a week than they usually do in 6 months, they will survive.

I suppose I could go on, but it’s time for a nap. What’s in your Mama’s (Papa’s) Sick kit?

P.S. Go wash your hands. With soap. I’d hate to think you caught my germs.

Hope you are feeling better. Must be why I haven’t seen you playing scrabble?

The Mr. and I were both knocked flat by the stomach flu a few years back. We tried to call his parents to pick up the kids, but they were sick too. My 8 year old was maybe 4 at the time and he didn’t seem to mind at all that we left the TV on and told him to make himself cereal for two days. Trying to make him toast one morning was my big undoing :)
