What I Did This Summer

August 24th, 2007 by Chantal Hubert · 1 Comment

baby and corn on the cobThis summer, we were together.

We went to bed late and woke up late. We ate corn on the cob and munched on raspberries. We breathed a collective sigh of relief; only worrying about the next soccer game we were needed at. Our family swam in the pool and drank lemonade by the backyard fire. We sang songs, lit sparklers, and roasted marshmallows. The kids chased and caught fireflies, amazed at their tiny homemade lanterns.

Camping, walking, and bike riding – we enjoyed each moment of each one. We went for ice cream and didn’t rush to get home for bedtime. We skipped baths and even tooth-brushing because we were just too busy having fun and too sleepy to endure even one chore.

Our goal this summer was to shirk off the hectic pace of the school year and regroup. Decide if we wanted to be one of those statistical over-committed families next year. We wanted to be busy of our own accord, not shoved here or there, but moving freely. Our home has been reorganized and so have our priorities. We’re headed back to our original goal of being a well-rounded family; involved in many different things. Our main priority is now to be together and less stressed. If it makes me cringe or causes bitterness, it won’t be happening. If I feel myself being caught up in the hype of making sure our children are given every opportunity, I’ll think of this summer.

The best summer we’ve had so far.

That sounds like our USUAL summer. This summer, we overdid the “fun things”. Next summer, we will go back to lying about on the floor, playing cards, and baking, and building a huge puzzle. That is what the long vacation is all about!
