It’s been happening for years now. As soon as Halloween decorations start to find their way to store shelves, so does Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa decor. Last week I went shopping and noticed all of the Thanksgiving items were already marked down 60 percent.
I purchased a few new Thanksgiving decorations and saved about $35.
When I was a kid I remember taking trips to the mall right after Thanksgiving to check out the Christmas (or Winter) decorations. Back then, Thanksgiving was a big deal. All of the stores recognized the holiday and waited until Black Friday to display the Christmas decor.
What has happened to Thanksgiving? Sometimes I enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday more than Christmas. There are no presents involved so you don’t have to worry about getting the right item. Which also means family members can spend time reconnecting and not who got who what. The food is always good. Truly, stuffing is one of the best side dishes ever!
This year we’ll be reading our Thanksgiving books. But what I hope to teach my daughters is that we need to give thanks for all that we have, for our family, and for our health. Hopefully they are old enough to really appreciate the meaning of this special holiday.

I’m with you – Thanksgiving is a better holiday than Christmas. It’s easier, less stressful, and the only expectation is that you get some good food.
We’ll be spending Thanksgiving with my in-laws, who now all live within 5 miles of our house. Christmas will involve my family traveling from across the country and seven houseguests for a week. Guess which one makes me nervous?

Duuuude, stuffing isn’t a side dish, it’s a MAIN COURSE!

My family is guilty of beginning to decorate for Christmas early, but for good reason. My grandparents head south every winter and before they go, we like to celebrate our Thanksgiving & Christmas with them (complete with the tree). This year, I have held off on putting up the tree until after thanksgiving, but have started to slightly decorate the outdoors for the season. And then, it’s mostly the items that I need the ground to be soft for. And I won’t lie- Christmas is my fav. holiday, but not because of gifts. I love the look of snow, Christmas trees and the overall decor!

Jessica,
. But I do love the simplicity of Thanksgiving.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas too – especially the decor! I have a little too much Christmas spirit according to my husband, I guess it stems from filling 2 cupboards in the kitchen and one bedroom closet with holiday decorations
STL Mom – good luck with the 7 house guests for a week. I’d be a little nervous too! Hopefully it will be a great time.
Nan – agreed!

I completely agree with you I was looking for a santa for my two kids to see and every where I looked they didn’t have any they all came in Nov. durning Thanksgiving, What has happened to the world for all these stores and other places and things to forget all about Thanksgiving it’s crazy I love Thanksgiving it’s my favorite holiday cause I don’t have to spend a lot of money and I get to spend time with my family but it seems like the media and other places have just forgot about Thanksgiving and I see it happening in younger kids and some of my family now all they think about is Christmas and getting new toys and stuff and it really sucks I miss Thanksgiving !
