So, we’re going down to Disneyworld next week. This trip is a year in the planning. I’ve already done all of the major arrangements: booked the resort, mailed down a package so that we can save bags on the plane, worked with school to get homework, etc. I was all ready and feeling good about being on top of things. Now, with the H1N1 flu thrown into the mix, this Mom is worried.
Tomorrow, I take the kids to their pediatrician to get their flu shots. These are the regular flu shots because the H1N1 batch hasn’t come in yet. Normally, I am not one to be hard over to get the kids their flu shots in the fall. It’s not that I have any strong feelings one way about the flu vaccine, it’s just that sometimes I get them vaccinated against the flu, sometimes I don’t. It depends on whether both of the kids are healthy at the time we’re there in October anyway for my son’s annual checkup. If they are, we get it, if they aren’t we don’t. I don’t usually make a special trip.
This year, I am making a special trip just to get them the flu shot.
I guess the reason I am making it a priority this year is the travel. We’re going to be on an airplane, with all of those bottled up germs. Then we’ll be staying in a hotel room, not our own beds. Then we’ll be traveling through the parks where all manor of germs are lurking on every surface.
But in all honesty, I am not worried. Exposure to germs is just the normal part of life. I wasn’t going to cancel the trip, but perhaps the vaccine will help me to rest a little easier as I encounter all of those “end of the world” headlines.
Work ran out of the seasonal flu vaccine, so the hubby and I are out of luck, unless we make special appointments with our primary care physicians. At work, it’s free. At the doctor’s it’s not. I am not going to get one because I never do, but am on the fence about having the hubby make a special trip. He is more prone to getting sick than I am.
How about everyone else out there? Are you getting the kids vaccinated, for either the seasonal flu, the H1N1 or both? Are you and your spouse getting vaccinated? What is your thought process behind the decisions?

I’m on the fence with the H1N1 vaccine too. I generally do not get a flu vaccination, but I have opted for my kids to get it for the past 2 years since they have been in daycare/preschool. They have an appointment next week for their annual check-up and we are probably going to go ahead with the normal flu vaccine. I’m not pro-vaccine so this isn’t an easy decision for me. I am at a loss for what to do about the H1N1 vaccine thou, the news has me scared while my friends in healthcare say the media is making a big deal out of nothing…
Take some extra vitamin C and probiotics, if you use them. Good luck staying germ-free!
