The Sun is Setting

August 17th, 2007 by Megin Hatch · No Comments

sunsetSummer’s over. I know, I can’t quite believe it myself. Here in Maine school starts in just 11 days. A friend made an analogy the other day that completely rings true. June is like Friday, July is Saturday, and August is Sunday. It’s now mid-day on Sunday and it’s time to start getting ready for Monday morning.

But, but, but… I’m not done. We have more stuff to do. There are days to be spent in the waves. There are nights to be spent ’round a bonfire. There are hikes to be taken. There are bottles of sunscreen and bug stray to finish before the school buses come to collect the Punks.

In the next 11 days I am going to try to lengthen the remaining days and cram lots of relaxation into a very short period of time. You know, hurry up and relax!! We’ll spend days at the beach digging in the sand and body-surfing. We’ll look for crabs and starfish. We’ll head to the lake and dive for rocks and build dams and practice handstands in the water. We’ll spend time relaxing together. A few nights before school starts we will invite the neighborhood to an ice cream social. We’ll buy some ice cream and the neighbors will bring toppings and the adults will lament the passing of summer while the kids throw together a kickball game or a massive circle of duck duck goose.

When I was a child summers lasted forever. The days were so long and relaxed. Is it just me? Did this summer pass as quickly as a weekend for your family, too? How will you mark the end of summer? What’s left on your list?
