On September 28th, CityMama and Sassafrass called for people to change their lives. Instead of complaining about your life and what’s wrong with it, they challenged their readers to take steps to fix what is wrong.
Something about their heartfelt posts struck a chord with me. Instead of the unrealistic, stock “overhaul” that some may advocate, CityMama and Sassafrass went a different route: small, attainable, and, most importantly, realistic changes.
For me, my change is my weight. It’s something that I’ve “battled” my entire life and much money has been wasted on special food and programs designed for people who must enjoy interment camp style cuisine.
I must eat breakfast every morning: healthy cereal with 1% milk, fruit and black coffee.
I must get off of my butt for at least 45 minutes and move; daily.
I bought a really cool exercise DVD so that I can’t use the “weather excuse” when it comes to exercise. I also consider chasing Cara a good form of exercise.
I must stop referring to myself as a “fat-ass” and as “gross” and “unattractive”.
That last one’s going to be the hardest thing to change.
A habit that you’ve had for over twenty years is a hard one to break.
That’s what I’m changing.
What would you like to change?
No one’s perfect; we all have our demons.
No change is too small.

I’m trying to write more, for me. It’s the one thing I’ve always loved, writing poetry and short prose, so I’m forcing myself to write again. Sure, some of it is really bad, but sometimes, it’s lovely and it’s so amazing to sit back and think “I did that.”
Small changes can be good for the soul after all.
