Parenting Alert: FDA Says No To Cough Syrup For The Under-2 Crowd

August 16th, 2007 by Stu Mark · 2 Comments

This just announced: The US Food And Drug Administration just gave a firm warning to parents - Don’t give cough or cold medicines to anyone under 2 years old without specific instruction from a qualified physician. The FDA will meet in October to have a more thorough review, via a panel of experts, of the facts regarding infants/toddlers and cough/cold medications.

Here’s the money quote: “Questions have been raised about the safety of these products and whether the benefits justify any potential risks from the use of these products in children, especially in children under 2 years of age,”

We now return you to your regular broadcast day.

I’m not too surprised. They’ve been wondering about the efficacy for a while now. I’ve been trying to get that point through to my husband.

The frustrating part is how much easier it is to get children’s cold medicine that include a cough syrup component than one that simply contains a decongestant. Ever since Sudafed started being sold only through pharmacists I’ve had to watch out for this a lot more carefully.

The irritating thing is that the drug companies KNOW about the bad effects of the drugs and mega-vitamins that they sell. They have files and files of customer complaints and test results, but they advertise the products so well that we don’t even read the small print on the box before buying. All we see is the sweet kid in the ad, who was so sad and gets all better with medicine. I was lucky enough to temp for 6 weeks in the complaints department of a huge drug company, when I was a lass. I will never give my children multi-vitamins or multi-symptom medicine as a result. Talk to your pharmacist, and get only what you need for the symptom which needs treating. And read the small print on the bottle!
