With a newly minted teenager in the house, I know a little bit about current Top 40 Radio.
Wait, do they even say “Top 40,” anymore? Whatever.
At any rate, I listen to quite a bit of today’s music. Most of the time, it’s OK with me, although there are some songs that just annoy me to no end.
It’s not really even the explicit lyrics so prevalent today that bother me, it’s just that some of this stuff just isn’t music, and, as for the ones that actually have a tune, just how many variations of, “ooh, ooh, baby girl lemme buy you a drink while I’m ogling you pretending like I lurrrrve you,” are there?
And girls? We are more than aware that you’re “strong and too good for him.”
But, there’s a lot of current music I like, too, and, my peers do occasionally wonder how I know who T-Pain is, much less what he “sings.” I try hard to keep an open mind, and, accept that the music of my kids’ lives, no matter how much I try to introduce them to the “right stuff.” I don’t want the fact that R&B and rap-based music simply aren’t my favorites to keep me from knowing about their music.
Wait. Stop. Did I just say,”it’s not music,” and, “it doesn’t have a tune?”
Hey, you kids, get offa my lawn. Now, someone go get me my teeth.
Those are pretty bold statements from someone whose formative years featured the musical stylings of Def Leppard, Flock of Seagulls, and, Night Ranger.
Guess it’s back to Rhianna, and Fall Out Boy for me, when you look at it that way.

“You’re motoring
What’s your price for flight
In finding mister right
You’ll be alright tonight…”
HA! How about a little Howard Jones?
“You can look at the menu, but you just can’t eat
You can feel the cushion, but you can’t have a seat.”
Deep. My kids are pretty ok with my music still… but I know the time is coming.
My 7 year old has been singing the tunes from High School Musical. He loves that movie
I think that might be what he imagines that high school will actually be like. We of course encourage the delusion that he will suddenly break out in song and dance between classes.
heh.

I was an FM jock back in the last half of the 80s. I *love* music, and am very fond of the music from that era. Air Supply still gets to me, even more than when I was in high school. Yes, I admit to liking Air Supply and The Bee Gees as much as I admit to liking The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, MegaDeath, and The Flaming Lips.
Maybe this Saturday we could open up a full discussion on the music that parents play in the car when the kids aren’t around.
