Giving New Meaning to Parenting

Male Bonding

Boy pretending to conquer dad by kicking near his faceHubby and the boys started something new last week: a Tae Kwon Do class. We’ve been promising to try it out for months, and I finally got my act together and called to get details on the program. It couldn’t possibly be a better setup for us. There’s a beginner class that lasts 45 minutes in a small room and the only other student is a 7 year old boy. My younger boys are fitting right in there. At age 6 (and a very important half), an individualized class that’s shorter is just perfect.

After the beginner session is the main class which Hubby and the older boys are attending. This is 2 hours of practice, both group and individual. I was really impressed at the way the teacher manages to spend time with individuals as well as have the more advanced students help the newer ones. Class is once a week, but there is an optional extra session weekly for a small extra fee. Overall it’s cheaper than other sports we’ve done, with less time and lower pressure on the boys.

Tonight all the boys practiced their moves and then Hubby had them do a little sparring in the back yard. The testosterone was flowing, let me tell you. The smiles were pretty big though, and no one came in and broke anything afterward.

I hope this works out to be something we can enjoy for a long time.
