September is as natural a month as January for making resolutions. Summer wraps itself up and the sun is softened by cooler mornings and the rumbling bus pulls to the stop and whisks the school-aged Punks away for hours of “reading streets” and “everyday math.”
And Mom walks back to the house holding the hand of the at-home Punk wondering where August went. And July. And the past 8 3/4 years since she birthed her eldest.
And Mom looks down at the hand in hers and thinks of the kids on their way to school and the man who crawled out of bed while she was still sleeping and she resolves to live more intentionally with those she holds dear. To not look back on a Sunday evening and wonder what they’ve done for 2 days. To not look at her daughter and wonder when she stopped wearing mismatched Chuck Taylors and started brushing her hair.
For her, that might mean scheduling her time and crossing things off a list. It might mean looking people in the eye and seeing them. It might mean saying no more and saying yes more. It might mean finding joy in tedium. It might mean setting the right goals and accomplishing them. It might mean relishing the feeling of a small hand in hers.
But that’s what it might mean for her. What will it mean for you?
