Editor’s note: We’re starting a new feature here at GNMParents: Kid Concepts - These will be essays written by kids, giving parents an opportunity to view the world as seen through the eyes of children, not adults. Our first writer is 13 year old Nick Chance, please welcome him to GNMParents. His viewpoint on his own birthday may just surprise you:
3 Things Not To Get Me For My Birthday:
-
A Haircut
The first thing you shouldn’t get me for my birthday is a hair cut. I love my long hair sooo much! If it were to get cut, I would die.*sarcasm* My dad let me grow my hair out this year and this is the first time its been this long. I LOVE IT!! I get tons of compliments from kids at school. It’s not horse-tail long, but perhaps John Lennon long, (before Yoko). So numero uno on my list is to not have an evil, stupid haircut. BLEH!
-
Tickets to a soccer game
Now before you skip over this one, thinking I’m stupid, hear me out. Lots of people love soccer and play all the time. Some even live it. I know that it’s considered “the best sport†and it’s sweeping the nation, but to me, its just running laps while putting a ball with your feet, with short shorts and high socks. I think that it is a waste of energy. The only thrill of the game is when you score a goal or save one. Now that’s just me and my opinion. But I’m sticking by it.

A big bowl of chili
The last thing on my list is a big bowl of chili. To me it appears to be a big sloppy mess. I think it is gross! Even the name, “chili†makes me think the first bite will be icy mush. It gives me goose bumps just writing this. The bad part about this is that everyone in my family except my mom worships the stuff. Every chance they can get it from the store they cook it all night and the smell forces me to my room. When my mom gets home I practically tackle her and give her the boo-boo eyes that ask her, “mommy? What are you having?†If she liked chili, I wouldn’t know what I would do! Any way, for YEARS my dad and brother have been pressuring me into trying it, and one day I tried just a wittle smigums. I lost it, and ran to my room. So that’s what I think about your icky chili!! Thank God for mouth wash!

Nick — You’re funny! Keep writing. Comedy may be your niche.

Nick-
How about clothes? Music? All of the teenagers that I know seem to love gift cards best.
What is the very best and the very worst gift you’ve gotten?

Slouching Mom - Thanks!
Megin - I like clothes, especially light zip-up hoodies, tight clothes, comfy slip-on shoes like Vans. I LOVE music, I thrive on music. Gift cards are good, but I mostly ask for particular CDs. A good video game works, but just the ones I test (rent) first.
Very best and worst gift I’ve gotten? I think that might be a future posting.
Erica - Thanks, but about my doo. — I guess I’m a ghost, cause a week after I submitted the above post, I cut AND dyed my hair!
Wanna peek?
