It’s a bumper edition of Hot Stuff, in fact it’s probably the best edition we’ve had! Check out the links then vote for your favourite in the comments. The winner will receive an ‘I’m Hot Stuff Award’ for their blog. Voting closes on Thursday morning.
And The Nominees Are:
Baby Einstein - For and Against
After President Bush gave Julie Aigner founder of Baby Einstein a mention in the state of union address it seems that a split has emerged. We seem to have a difference in opinion as to whether Baby Einstein is indeed a positive educational resource for babies or an excuse to ‘prop up babies in front of the television’ as stated by Tekla from SV Moms Blog.
Kerri of Play Library is clearly a fan of Baby Einstein and gives congratulations to Julie.
In the against camp we have Tekla of SV Moms Blog who has some strong criticism of the Baby Einstein range.
Check them both out and make up your own mind.
21st Century Living
You know you are living in 2007 when.. is great, I was definitely doing number 12 - you’ll need to check it out to see what 12 was ![]()
Can anyone help?
Who better to help a parent than another parent, that is part of the reason GNMParents came into being, and probably one of the main reason why mommy (and daddy) blogging is so prevalent. Christina has asked for some help in time to enter confessional, can you help her out?
The moral of the story is…
Stu has nominated this news story about a lion attack. Stu says the way the man’s wife jumped to his defense is a great example of how you can do anything. This story is a good way to take current news and turn it into a life lesson for kids. Thanks Stu.
Hair Care
Another nomination by Stu, The Tangle Tamer is a new product on the market which claims to eradicate the problem of tangles. There is one customer feedback on Amazon which rates it as five stars, so if it’s to be believed, it could be the answer to many a parent’s prayers. Stu says “I don’t know if it works, but I’m going to get one for my 11 year-old daughter just based on the concept”
Get Organised
Megin has nominated ‘organizing the van‘ from I’m an organizing junkie. The blog has a great design. This is the first time I have come across it, so I’ll be sure to have a better look.
Did you check ‘em all? Ok, vote vote vote. Nominations for next weeks Hot Stuff here.

Go Tekla! We used Baby Einstein, but we regret it now - our kids are TV addicts.

I vote for Kerri’s upbeat and positive post at Play Library.
Kerri // Jan 30, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Thanks for the nomination!!! I do appreciate it, though I wouldn’t exactly say I’m a fan of the products. I’ve clarified here:

Not to start a debate, but Freakonomics says, I think, that there is no real correlation between how much tv you watch and how smart you become.
My kids are too old for Baby Einstein, so I have no opinion on it, but they each have tv in their room, as well as TiVo and DirecTV, and they both carry at least a 3.5 in middle school. Yeah, I’m hoping to bump that up to a 4.0 average by the time they get into high school, but I don’t know that cutting their tv will get them there.
And, yes, it’s possible that too much tv is bad and one day there will be solid evidence to support a severe limitation on it for kids. So don’t bash me over the head with a couch cushion, I’ve already conceded that I could be wrong.

I agree with Tekla. My vote is with her.
Valerie // Jan 30, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Tekla–my vote is with you! Thanks for standing up for those who can’t even sit up for themselves yet!
Wendy // Jan 30, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Go Tekla! Stand up and take a … well, seat?
kate // Jan 30, 2007 at 11:00 pm
Studies show that children should not watch any TV at all before the age of 2. Before 2, they should get their input - and their cues from real people.
Baby Einstein is offensive. But so is Bush. Tekla, here’s one for you.
Michelle // Jan 31, 2007 at 12:04 am
Every nurse, doctor, and baby psychologist I have ever read, met, or heard insists TV is bad for children under two. No matter what the TV is, or who it is geared for. Not that it will stop us from puting it on once & a while… but does the leader of our country have to be so ignorant and actually encourage it? Tekla, I agree.
Chantal Hubert // Jan 31, 2007 at 12:39 am
I have no issue with TV for older children. My kids get a certain amount of TV time daily provided their homework is done and no help is needed around the house. The shows are age appropriate and I ensure they understand what is going on. But for babies and toddlers? Not a fan. They don’t have the tools to process what they see and hear.
My vote goes to Tekla.
Tekla // Jan 31, 2007 at 12:47 am
Thanks for the nomination and the votes. Bush and Baby E both push my buttons, as you all now know. And sure, I’ll vote for myself
Jeff // Jan 31, 2007 at 12:51 am
with respect to the other nominees…this award is all Tekla’s!
brilliant stuff. Thanks
Stu Mark // Jan 31, 2007 at 1:15 am
Ok, let me be clear. Yeah, I get it, no TV under 2. That’s no big deal. If you’re parking your baby in front of the television, you’re not trying hard enough. Try cards with them instead (the ones with big-print words and numbers).
Also, Freakonomics says that it doesn’t matter whether you read to your kid or not, it doesn’t make them smarter. However, Freakonomics says that what does make a kid smarter is having an abundance of books laying around the house.
Kellys // Jan 31, 2007 at 1:41 am
I vote for Kerri. She is awesome.
Karen // Jan 31, 2007 at 3:15 am
I read both articles and I vote for Kerri.
I congratulate Julie too and I thank her. Without her videos there might be parents ready to snap from nothing to eat, no shower, and no sanity.
Katie // Jan 31, 2007 at 5:14 am
If Bushie is for it, I’m against it. Go Tekla
Erica // Jan 31, 2007 at 9:08 am

Great tv talk- I am a believer in moderation. My kids have limited screen time- tv and computer. Our tv and computers will always be in common areas, not bedrooms.
I think the nominations were great this week! That being said, I’m truly inspired by the organizing your van post, so my vote goes there.
Revka // Jan 31, 2007 at 4:45 pm
Voting for Kerri. It’s great to see a mompreneur become a success and even better to see others recognizing that success (whether or not they agress with the product).
Erica // Jan 31, 2007 at 5:49 pm
Great point Revka.
Laura // Jan 31, 2007 at 11:24 pm
Wow, how fun to be nominated.
Thank you!
Laura
