He’s Just Fine, Thanks

October 9th, 2008 by Megin Hatch · 3 Comments

I’ll start by saying: he’s fine.

I was on my way home from the gym when Aidan got hurt. I pulled into the driveway and was greeted by Lucy running out of the house telling me to “hurry, Mama, Aidan has a big boo-boo!” My mom eyes took in the situation as I scanned to try and get an idea of what happened while my husband held my screaming boy in his arms. Washcloth (not, in fact, dripping with blood, but decorated with bright pink and red hearts), pressed to his forehead and bag of frozen peas held fast to the back of his head.

Aidan was playing next door with our 6 year old neighbor. In their driveway sat a fairly heavy duty utility trailer, the kind used to haul small/medium sized tractors. It has a heavy ramp that unlatches to allow for easy loading and unloading. The boys envisioned creating a pretty cool bike ramp. They did not anticipate the weight of the ramp as it fell on Aidan’s head and threw him to the ground. They didn’t envision the baseball sized bump that grew immediately out of the back of his skull or the abrasions on his forehead or the broken nose.

They were just thinking about how cool it would be to have a bike ramp to play on.

My boy is fine. He’s hamming it up for the camera and checking out his now black eyes in the mirror and worrying a little bit about what his classmates will say when he returns to school today.

*And that is a worry that I am so grateful to have this morning.*

PS: Is anyone else heading to the BlogHer Reachout tour this weekend? I’ll be in Boston on Saturday! Say hi!

All I can say is-boys will be boys. No matter how much we try to protect them, they’ll do all they can to make you worry. I have a son who just turned two and has been to the ER twice already. No broken bones yet, but I won’t be too surprised when that actually happens.

re: the red and pink not dripping with blood washcloth

get some brown washcloths/facetowels and keep them in your first aid stash. blood doesn’t show up so much in our experience.

I love how he’s flashing the peace sign – it’s like, “I’m good, yo!”
