Giving New Meaning to Parenting

Happy Holidays

December 25th, 2009 by Kelly Damron · 3 Comments

Christmas tree and star made of lightsLast year on Facebook I remember the Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays debate. Did you see this too? This year I haven’t been on Facebook too much so I haven’t noticed if the debate is back.

Many of the people in my networking group are Jewish, so obviously, they do not celebrate Christmas. My mother’s best friend is also Jewish, however, she celebrates both holidays with her family. A woman in my mastermind group is Jewish and mentioned to me that when people say, “Merry Christmas” it irks her just a little. Her comment was that not everyone celebrates Christmas so Happy Holidays is more appropriate.

For the past few years I have made a conscious effort to find cards that state Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings. My husband really liked a card this year that said Merry Christmas, but I overrode his choice stating that not everyone we send holiday cards to celebrates the Christmas holiday.

I guess is it all a matter of opinion and/or perspective. We celebrate Christmas. However, I make a point to say, “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas.” Right or wrong, this is a perspective that I plan on passing along to my children.

Regardless of what you celebrate in December, may your holidays be merry!

Funny that you mention it – I’ve been thinking about this as well. – I’m Jewish, but I get that 80% of US citizens view themselves as Christian, so starting in mid-December, I say Merry Christmas to everybody I see, unless they’re wearing a yarmulke. – I’m cool with the state of religion in this country (though I’d like it to stay out of my government, which is another discussion). – So, Kelly, I wish you a Merry Christmas and blessings of the season.

I prefer to say “Happy Holidays” so I don’t have to stop and remember which of my friends and neighbors are Jewish or other religions. I’m not sure if I’m being polite and considerate, or just lazy and forgetful.

I’m with you STL Mom. It is easier to say Happy Holidays. It ensures you capture everyone no matter what they celebrate and it makes it easier on you too – not having to remember who celebrates what.

Stu – I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. Happy New Year!
