Get Yourself Fed

October 29th, 2006 by Erica Douglas · No Comments

The worst thing about having a new baby (apart from the saggy belly) is the lack of sleep.

The second worst thing (I know that is bad english) is never getting the chance to eat (no, I’m afraid chocolate biscuits and doritos don’t count).

The magazines all say ‘make sure you eat properly‘, ‘eat carbs for energy’, ‘get someone to make you nutritious food’ (ahem, who?).

Here’s how I survived the first few frantic months of motherhood :)
As soon as the baby is having a nap (you only need 45mins) stick a small pot on with some fresh new potatoes - cut them small so they cook quicker (no time to shop?, online home delivery - I can vouch for it)

While they are cooking, make the bottles up, do the dishes, tidy the kitchen. Anything that needs doing (in the kitchen though…you don’t want to have the baby woken by fire engines). Multi-tasking is the key to childcare.

Chop a bit of onion, grate a bit of cheese.

Make yourself a coffee or a juice.

Check on the baby (still sleeping……good)

Drain potatoes, here’s the technical bit(!)…..take a wooden spoon, get a scoop of butter, and crush the potatoes. Add cheese and onion. Mash a bit more (see the mashing bit as therapy…vent the frustration….no sleep - take that..mash……too much washing - take that…..mash)

Add salt and pepper to taste (Posh? Add some herbs!)

And serve…..in a bowl with a fork (or spoon). Comfort food. Yum

Variations on this dish. Add ham. Or push the boat out and add some sweetcorn.

What are your hunger-saving recipes, when there is no time but you can’t remember the last time you ate anything hot?
