The Fourth of July is just around the corner. What fun have you planned for your family? We’ll be doing lots of eating, playing, and watching fireworks. And then eating some more. We all agree that holidays are about the food, right? No? Dang.
If you’re looking for something more than just potato salad (and why, pray tell, would anyone need more than THAT?) and fireworks, why not plan something fun that celebrates our country? Better yet, why not plan something fun and educational that also involves FOOD! See! I told you holidays were about the food!
Kids love to cook and it is so educational. Let them do most of the measuring and pouring and stirring. Let them pre-heat the oven and set the timer. Ask them what they think would happen if you added extra of one ingredient or left another out altogether. Get those little minds working!
Here are a couple of fun, kid-friendly recipes to celebrate the Fourth!
This first here isn’t exactly a recipe, but it’s an IDEA! And we could all use new ideas right? Right! Why not make red, white, and blue ice cubes? You could easily do this using kool-aid, but if you prefer a more healthy approach, just freeze a couple ice cube trays with blueberry juice and any kind of red juice that you like. Add a couple of red, white, and blue ice cubes to a glass full of clear soda and you have a festive drink that was easy to make!
Now that we’ve got your drink out of the way, lets try making a fun snack. How about fruit kebabs? Healthy and fun! You’ll need red, white and blue fruit and kebab sticks. Strawberries and watermelons would make the perfect red fruit for these. Blueberries or purple grapes are great for the blue and for the white you could use diced apples or bananas. What kid (or adult!) wouldn’t gobble these up?
What Fourth of July party would be complete without some sort of edible flag? Why not try making the Grand Old Flag Cheese Spread from Kraft? It’s easy, it’s got only five ingredients, and it’s sure to be a hit.
What’s that? You prefer your flag to be full of sugar? Why not try making my favorite Fourth of July dish, the Flag Cake.
Kids love to cook. Adults love to eat. It’s a win-win situation!
