Building Community

January 12th, 2007 by Megin Hatch · 1 Comment

Rocks in my Dryer, the Momma of the very popular “Works For Me Wednesday,” has eloquently expressed the need for support and community in the world of parenting.

I feel quite passionately that women need other women. Moms need other moms. Parents need other parents. I’ve talked about it on the Career Mom Radio Podcast. I am a stay at home mom. Without a support network of real life friends, and the support of an online parenting community, I might quit and get a paying job with fewer benefits.

It’s the time to reach out to another parent. It’s the time to deepen your friendships beyond the surface and reach into the corners where the sometimes hard to admit stuff lives. It’s time to share and support and appreciate.

How do you do it? How do you give AND receive support?

Having kids has introduced me to something amazing. I have never felt less alone as I do now.

I’ve surrounded myself with a wonderful group of women. Friends who can help me in a pinch, if it means just watching one of my kids while I tend to another or knowing that I can call any of them in an emergency (and I have!).

Mostly, they all listen and they validate. I feel like I can say anything to them and not feel judged. It’s very freeing and comforting.
