Back To School

varied numbers in a typographic caseSpring Break wasn’t quite long enough for us this year, but we are back to school. I could have happily taken another week (or two) off, but I figure we’ll enjoy our time off even more when its warm out, so we are back to work. If we keep it up we should be done with second grade around the end of May. Hallelujah!

To ease the transition back in to school we have had a light schedule the past few days. I’ve tried to make school work more fun by incorporating videos and games more often than normal. Yesterday I printed off numbers 1-10 in a large bubble font so that each number filled nearly one whole page. The kids and I all colored the numbers and then took them to our local office supply store to be laminated. We’ve played a lot of games with the numbers already. For Cindy-Lu, who is just beginning to recognize the numbers, I ask her to put her toes on number 3, her nose on 2, her elbow on number 5, etc. For Eeyore, who is struggling a bit with memorizing the multiplication tables, I tell him to put his knee on the answer to 3 times 2, his ear on 2 times 5, etc. The kids have a blast because they are rolling around on the floor and they don’t even realize they are learning.

I have found quite a few different pre-school games that you can print and glue to file folders, but they really need to be laminated to hold up well. I’m considering purchasing a laminator for the house after seeing how much the store charges ($1.08!) to laminate just one piece of paper. That could easily get expensive, so I’m checking out laminators to see what the costs are. I really think it will come in handy for pre-school with Cindy-Lu.

Any other moms out there have a laminator at home and love it or hate it?

I would love a laminator! The huge roller laminators that use heat like I was able to use back when I was teaching would be fantastic. But they’re soooo expensive. :) I’ve used clear contact paper before with good results.

That was going to be my suggestion, clear contact paper.

Me three - clear Contact paper works really well, is cheap, easy, quiet and safe to use.

    Good Luck! :)

My sister used contact paper when she was teaching, and it seems to work.

A fun math thing to do when the weather warms up: big numberline painted outside in the driveway. You can make up games where you hop from number to number, and even include negative numbers! Hopping in twos and threes is fun too, for teaching times tables.
